Diamonds on the Desert Floor

Long Tall Deb and the Drifter Kings have crafted a delicious blend of gutbucket rhythm and fermented blues topped with the rich, soulful vocals of “Long Tall” Deb Landolt. Bassist Melvin Powe and drummer Doug Oscard provide  the solid backbone for guitarist Richey B’s expressive work. The band’s strong original music and dynamic performances are the reason many folks call them a group on the rise. As the winners of the 2009 River City Ohio Blues Competition, they represented the Blues, Jazz, and Folk Music Society of Marietta at the 2010 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee.

This CD of eleven original songs, produced by Michael Hill, is a tasty blend of gutbucket rhythm and fermented blues topped with the rich and soulful vocals of “Long Tall” Deb Landolt. Bassist Melvin Powe and drummer Doug Oscard provide a solid machine in delivering the backbone behind guitarist Richey B’s excellent slide work. What is particularly exciting about this release is that each song has its own distinctive sound, and the material seems to flow in a natural progression throughout. What appeals is a carefully and quality-crafted debut CD that sounds fresh, new and exciting.  It was recently honored as a “Pick To Click” on Sirius/XM Radio’s B.B. King’s Bluesville!

Our debut CD Diamonds on the Desert Floor features 11 true stories that will have the listener traveling through the range of nearly every possible human feeling while tapping their feet right along with it. “Diamonds on the Desert Floor” is a well rounded, solid CD…It’s easy to understand why it was a finalist for Best Self-Produced CD, and I know that my listeners will enjoy Long Tall Deb & the Drifter Kings as a CD Pick of the Week, and in the regular rotation as well.

Deb and the Drifter Kings have an impressive skill at capturing little novellas with their songwriting, and deserve their props, as well, for being able to arrange the songs in a manner that doesn’t allow the lyrics to get lost in the translation.

~John Luttrell,

I’ve really been taken by the whole package. Her voice is very expressive and carries loads of truth and emotion and the band is up to carrying her soulfulness! ”

~Mike Reisz, Jazz & Blues Programmer, WDPS-FM in Dayton, Ohio

It’s understandable if you rub your eyes a bit the first time you catch Long Tall Deb Landolt onstage. Not only is she really tall—more than 6 feet—but she’s a tall blonde. And she belts out the blues more like Aretha than, say, Bonnie Raitt. In fact, the Texan-born Buckeye plays not only the blues but soul and R&B, in addition to boogie-woogie and other styles. Deb and the Drifter Kings’ 2010 debut album, Diamonds on the Desert Floor, is a powerhouse collection of original numbers.”
~ Richard Ades,  The Other Paper

Deb sings like a caged animal whose emotions are barely being held in check…if this CD is any indication, Deb and the band are destined for bigger and better things”
~ Steve Jones, Blues Blast Magazine

I have been deeply touched everytime I have listened to this album”
~ Mladen Loncar, Radio Krizevci, Croatia

This excellent CD offers a real maturity seldom heard on debut recordings…each song stands out on its own.”
